Summer Reading Lists
Elementary School
Elementary students are not required to read a particular book or series over the summer, but we encourage you to use the resources below to create a reading plan that is just right for your student and family. Choose the list for the grade your child will enter in the fall.
Please visit the Elementary Summer Learning Portal for elementary school reading lists.

Middle School, High School & AP
Reading, whether for pleasure or learning, has a great number of benefits. The act of reading "increases empathy, improves relationships with others, reduces symptoms of depression, and improves overall well-being" (BookTrust). Reading can expose us to the thoughts, worlds, and experiences of others that we might not ordinarily have. The more we read, the more we learn!
In connection with the NNPS Profile of a Learner, the act of reading can create students who are emotionally intelligent, equity-minded, academically prepared, resilient, and innovative.
Summer reading is required of all NNPS middle and high school students. Summaries of each text have been provided so that families can engage in discussion with their student(s) about the books. It is important that each student choose a book that is a good fit for them.
There is a Summer Reading Choice Board below that contains additional creative activities that can be done to enhance the student's experience with their summer reading text. This is optional. We also encourage all students to join the Newport News Public Library Summer Reading Challenge!
Copies of these texts can be found in the Newport News Public libraries, on the SORA app, and at local bookstores, should you desire to purchase the book.
